About Value
Where does value come from in leadership? In talent management? And how can value be maximized?

The secret of value profiles is that they accurately measure the component links of the value chain and thereby guide us to solutions that allow us to exercise good judgment, have excellent relations and sound principles to live by – we can call this success and fulfillment |
The Value Chain – building capacity for success and fulfillmentFrom value theory we know that there are 3 distinct dimensions of value with each dimension characterized by particular properties: e.g. perfection, comparison and uniqueness. Reaching their own conclusions and independently handling different properties, the value dimensions are like our modular physical senses such as sight, touch etc where outputs are combined – rather like mixing ingredients in a recipe. And just like a recipe, when we value objects, situations, people, ourselves, it’s the mix that is important, not just what’s present and in what amount but also what is missing. Addition, i.e. adding what is missing, becomes very important in valuing especially when we talk about effective communication and leadership. Each and every value dimension is linked to each and every other hence the metaphor of a “value chain”. In business and in organizations the value chain can be seen as consisting of People (representing individual value), Performance (relative value), and Goals (absolute value). The diagram below shows the component parts of each of these sources of value and indeed disvalue for it is true that in business and in life, much of the world is concerned with taking away value (so-called Transpositions) as it is with adding value (Compositions).
Unfortunately, all too often, inattention or an over-focus on different parts of the value-chain allows success and fulfillment to slip out of our grasp. This is especially true when we are under stress. Clear Value Vision is about paying attention to what is valuable in a given situation and responding appropriately. |
